Springer Spaniel
One of the commonest
dogs we get in at boarding kennels Nottingham is the Springer
Spaniel, which is a breed of gun dog that has been traditionally used
for flushing and retrieving game or as a sniffer dog. It is a very
affectionate, excitable breed which has an average lifespan of twelve
to fourteen years. The Springer is a medium sized dog and has a
moderately long coat with feathering on the legs and tail. Well
proportioned, and has a gentle expression with a friendly wagging tail.
Field bred dogs tend to have shorter ears than their show counterparts
and also have shorter thicker coats which as usually shed in the spring
or early summer. The coats of both are black or dark brown markings
with white being the predominant base colour. Males in the show dog
line average approximately 18 to 20 inches (46 to 51 cm) at the withers
and weigh on average 50 to 55 lb (23 to 25 kg). Females are usually
about an inch shorter and 10 lbs lighter.
Springers make an ideal hunting companion, being friendly, quick to
learn with an eagerness to please. Very affectionate and easy going
nature, good dogs have an alert quality. They do have an active mind
and can become bored easily so can be destructive and have exceptional
stamina so need a fair amount of exercise. They make good family pets
being good with children and other pets except for birds. They love the
water and jump in whenever they get a chance to get wet.
Common health problems tend to be hip dysplacia which can lead to
arthritis and retina problems that can lead to poor eysight or even
blindness. Being long eared they can suffer from ear infections and are
prone to putting weight on fairly quickly so beaware of feeding them
too much on too little exercise.
All in all these make excellent pets for any family and we often have
them come in to boarding kennels Nottingham.
